A Kind of Lifejacket
____________________
A kind of silence
like the house in the middle of nowhere
A kind of emptiness
like Coventry Cathedral open to the rain
A kind of distance
like England and France, seen together from the air
They cannot fool us
the made-up meals of the aeroplane
I take it on trust
that there is a lifejacket under my seat
below my feet
in the depths of cloud
I imagine you beckoning to me, calling
my name aloud
waking me from dreams of falling
to silence, making
life without you bittersweet.
